HUIN105 – Usability Analyse

HUIN206 – Blogpost 5 – Compare the use of avatars in WoW and sims Online

Avatars in Sims Online VS Avatars in World of Warcraft

In The Sims Online, the player will be represent by a virtual character, called a Sim. When you start the game, you will be able to customize your very own Sim. Your Sim can be either male or female. You can choose among different skin colors, hairstyles, facial attributes and clothes. (You will be able to buy more outfits for your character, once you start earning virtual money, called Simoleans.) The avatars are not limited to humans only, you can also choose it to be for instance a robot or an alien.

You can control your Sim by clicking on the screen to make it move and by clicking on objects to use them. The Sim will have certain needs that needs to be attended to constantly, like “sleep”, “hunger”, “to be social”, “hygiene” etc. It will even need to use the bathroom from time to time. If the avatar dies, you will be able to get it back to life.

In World of Warcraft, you will have to choose between two factions your avatar shall be part of. What faction you choose, will limit the amount of races you can choose for the character. “The Alliance” is one faction which consists of Humans, Dwarfes, Gnomes, Night Elves and Draenei. The opposing faction is “The Horde” consisting of Orcs, Trolls, Undead, Tauren and Blood Elves. If you choose one faction, your chatacter will not be able to communicate with members of the other faction. Your avatar will be able to attack avatars of the opposing faction, and will risk being attack by them as well. Once faction and race is set, you will be able to further customize the avatar by selecting hair style and color, skin color, facial hair and facial features. Your avatar can be either male or female. You can also choose what class your character shall be, which will determine by what means it will fight (magic, swords, bow, deamons etc). The type of clothes the character can wear will also be depending on what class you choose. Later in the game you will also be able to choose different professions for your avatar, so that it easier can make virtual money called gold, silver and copper.

You will be able to move your avatar around by using the arrow buttons on your keyboard, and you can also press keys that will make the character jump, draw its weapons, sit down, sleep etc. The charater will respond to your key presses instantly, and will not do any action that is not initiated by your key presses. Basically, you are the one controlling every single action of the character. The avatar will however, not have any basic needs like the Sims. It will not get tired, it will not require any food or have other bodily functions (it can drown though). Your character will fight and die… a lot. But you can get it back to life by simply moving your characters ghost from the graveyard and back to its corpse.

In my opinion, he different “needs” might make Sims avatar slightly more realistic than an avatar from WoW. A player is however able to control WoW avatars on a more personal level. In the Sims Online, you might feel like a god watching over your avatar, and ordering it around. The type of control you have over the Sim, will be through giving it orders. In WoW, on the other hand, you will be in complete control of every action of the avatar. You can not give it orders, since it is you controlling the character. You will therefore get the feeling that you ARE the character in this simulated world.

In conclution, the main difference between avatars from Sims Online and World of Warcraft, is that in Sims you are a god giving orders to one avatar, while in WoW you are the avatar.

HUIN206 Blog Post 3: Explore a social network

Posted February 12, 2007 by mlangoy
Categories: HUIN206

For this assignment, I chose to register at the popular social network Facebook, and explore the different possibilities this site can offer. Facebook is free, and seems to be quite popular among students for getting in touch with one another. You will be able to create your own profile, with a list of your interests and upload photographs to it. You can then get links to your friends profiles, and they will link to your profile, thus creating a network of friends.

A lot of problems currently exist regarding social networks. People often have friends within many varios social circles. We often change our behaviour according to what social situation we currently are in. You would for instance not talk and behave the same way amoung your parents that you do around your friends. To make a profile on a social network, will often mean that you will have to mix your different social roles together, or focus more on one role than the other. There could for example be different issues you would want to share with your drinking buddies, but that would not be appropriate for your co-workers at the office or your boss to find out about.

Some sites, like for instance Ecademy that is focusing on business relations, try to limit out the social context it is meant to be used within, thus solving this problem. However, many might find it too much of a workload to have to register to a different social network for each social context they might be involved in. Another solution to the context issue might be an option to make restrictions on your content, so that certain information can only be accessed by people within the specific context it is filed within.

Another problem would be that you are giving out too much information abouth yourself within the social network, and that people might abuse this information. Another person could for example claim to be you, based on the information that is available.

Advantages, on the other hand, and the main purpose of social networks for that matter, would be that it makes it much easier for people to get in touch with one another and thus expanding ones social network. You can find new friends based on common interests, or get in touch with people that are aprt of your friends social networks. One could call it: “Become friends with the friends of my friends.”

HUIN206 Task: Blog post 2

Posted February 7, 2007 by mlangoy

About the template and addons i chose for my blog:

I tried out some different themes for my blog, before i decided to go with the blue background and header that it currently has. I also chose some of the standard addons like the calender, and meta-information so that i can easier log into the blog, summary of my latest posts and display of the blogroll. I also found a RSS link to TeamTalk.com, a page i often visit for football news, which i though would be a nice addition.

Since most of the customizations i have chosen are part of optional standard selections in WordPress, i dubt that my choises can tell others much about myself. There really weren’t any need for the widgets, but they were available to use, and they looked nice. So it was techonology that already was present that made me do the choises.

Summary of HUIN 105 lecture

Posted February 2, 2007 by mlangoy
Categories: HUIN105

This is a summary of the 1.2.07 lecture in HUIN 105, written in Norwegian.

Workshop 3 – Analysis of a political site

Posted February 2, 2007 by mlangoy
Categories: HUIN105

For this assignment, I have chosen to evaluate the website of the Norwegian political party Arbeiderpartiet, AP.

Content:

The site is made by a political party in Norway, so it is fair to assume that the messages will be intentionally shaped for a viewer that is familiar with a social knowledge of reality based on Norwegian culture. A major factor proving this is that the main site itself is only available in Norwegian, and the English speaking audience will only be able to get a brief history of the political party and its major issues on the English alternative of the site. Most of the buttons and selections are only available in Norwegian. The variation of Norwegian written language that AP has chosen to use is Bokmål, most likely since this is more common across the country than Nynorsk.

Design:

The webpage itself seem to be easily readable, organised and there are not too many features that could confuse the viewer. According to the dates on the articles, the page appears to be updated frequently. The logo sometimes changes position slightly when some of the buttons are pushed, which could be a specific problem to my FireFox browser, or be a sloppy mistake by the creators of the page. The site itself has a white background, and the buttons and headlines are coloured in different shades of red. The main logo is centred on the top of the page. Its denotation is a white rose on a red background, with the name of the party below it.

In connotation, this might symbolise various things for people that are part of other cultures. For the intended Norwegian viewer however, the colour red can be seen as a symbol for the political party’s on the left (red) wing, and may also present a certain sense of nationality since red is the dominant colour in the Norwegian flag. The provenance here that the rose is a well known symbol for love and friendship, and also for social democracy. It is also a commonly used symbol among other European political parties, for example the British and Irish Labour Parties. On both sides of the logo, there are placed pictures that will swap around once in a while. I will start by analysing the first picture on the left side.

The denotation of this picture, what it actually is it shows the viewer, is two smiling schoolgirls with backpacks walking down a road. The connotation, the hidden metaphors behind the picture, can be the message that AP wants to focus on school politics. The schoolgirls do not appear to be Norwegian by origin, something that could imply that AP wants more open immigration politics. The word “Solidarity” is written above them, which implies that AP wants everyone to have equal opportunities within the school system. There is also green grass in the background, something that could refer to environmental issues. The image switches to a fisherman working in a fish-farm.

This might try to get through the message that AP wants to take care of the old primary industries. The ocean with mountain in the background looks like a typical Norwegian environment, something that might imply that they want to keep the oceans and fjords clean, especially with the recent oil tanker leaks that has been covered by the media, and the strengthened focus on global warming nowadays. The word “Equality” can be seen at the bottom of the picture, which could be there to make the viewer think that AP wants to strive for equal possibilities in the working sector.

The first picture on the right side shows an elderly lady together with a younger woman dressed in white. The picture makes the viewer assume that the woman in white is a healthcare worker, and the picture may want to show us that AP prioritizes taking care of old people. The green leaves in the background once again hints towards a clean and healthy environment. The second image shows a portrait photo the AP front figure, and current Norwegian Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg.

He looks directly at the viewer and smiles, something that shows him as caring and trustworthy. White circular pencil strokes cover some of the edges of the pictures. This might be just to make them look more artistic, or they can maybe symbolize the wind or the waves, that would both characterize the Norwegian climate. The site has an interactive calendar with important dates with political meetings etc. on the left sidebar. On the top of the right sidebar, there is a reference to the famous Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen, which might show the viewers that AP cares about the Norwegian cultural heritage. There is also a scrolling selection bar where you can find out more about AP’s opinion on certain political issues. The main page itself shows a summary over current news items concerning the political party, in a somewhat similar style to a tabloid, with links the viewer can click on to get further information. The news articles appear to be updated frequently, and are all up to date. The linking style of the webpage appears to be in a NAV style, with all pages available on a navigation bar.

In conclusion, AP does not appear to have any videos and sound effects on the webpage, therefore it is hard to find any experimental meaning potential, the meaning behind how you articulate a message. The site uses modes such as text, pictures and colours to get their expression through. The language is intended for a Norwegian viewer, and is therefore mainly in Norwegian written-language. The pictures help to show the viewer the different issues and values the party wants to focus on.
